How High Should You Mount Your TV? A Handyman's Guide to Height, Wall Type & Hiding the Wires

We mount a lot of TVs across Fort Myers and Cape Coral, and the most common thing we fix is a TV that someone else hung too high. It looks fine on the day, and then every movie night ends with a sore neck. Here is how to get it right.

Start with eye level. When you are seated in your usual spot, the center of the screen should sit roughly at eye level — for most sofas that puts the center of the TV around 42 inches from the floor. A 65-inch TV is about 32 inches tall, so its bottom edge lands around 26 inches up. That is lower than most people expect, and it is the height that feels natural.

Above a fireplace or console? If you are mounting over a fireplace or a tall console, a tilting or full-motion mount lets you angle the screen down toward the seating so you are not staring up at it. Also check the heat: a working fireplace can push a TV past its safe temperature, so we measure before we recommend it.

Know your wall. Many Southwest Florida homes are concrete block with furring strips and drywall, not standard wood-stud walls. That changes the anchors, the drill bits and the technique. Standard drywall anchors will not hold a 65-inch TV in block; we use masonry anchors rated well above the TV's weight. On wood-stud walls, the mount goes into the studs, never into drywall alone.

Hide the wires. There are two ways to make the cables disappear. On a hollow wall we run an in-wall rated cable kit from behind the TV down to the outlet or console — clean and invisible. On a block wall, where there is no cavity, a paintable low-profile raceway is the honest answer, and it nearly vanishes once it matches the wall color.

Plan clean cable management. A dangling cable ruins the look, so we use appropriate in-wall cable kits or paintable low-profile raceways to keep the finished installation tidy.

Think about the whole wall. Soundbars, game consoles, streaming boxes and shelves all need a home. If you want a built-in look, we install wall unit entertainment centers that frame the TV and give every device a place, with cable management built in.
